Ceol na hEireann

Who are we?

Ceol na hEireann consists of an eclectic group of individuals who enjoy playing and singing the many traditional Irish songs learned or heard in days gone by. Between all the singers and musicians within the group they are still discovering lyrics and tunes not heard for years. Some of the group were born in Ireland, from the republic to the north, bringing their love of music with them to Canada, while others inherited the Irish Celtic musical heritage from their families. As part of the Okanagan Irish Society, the members of Ceol na hEireann are dedicated to ensuring that the tradition of Irish music and song remains a living one 'an traidisiún beo' and that it continues to be enjoyed by all ages and nationalities.

In the early days of the Okanagan Irish Society there were people who began to sing Irish songs together, usually after one of the social get-togethers. Over the years others have come and gone with the core group persevering. Many talented individuals have played and sung with Ceol na hEireann, each adding to the richness of the group. The present membership has grown to 15 members and increased its public performances. Ceol na hEireann play and sing mostly traditional Irish (with some Irish-American) music including songs like "Dear old Donegal", "Whiskey in the Jar", "Castle of Dromore", "Leaving of Liverpool" as well as instrumentals by contemporary Irish composers.

There is a song from every county and town in Ireland. It will take a lifetime to know all of them, but the pleasure is in the seeking. Not to mention the sharing with others the enjoyment of Irish music, wherever the spirit of the Irish is present.
